JOHN Y MURPHY - John Y Murphy, 67 years old, passed away at his home three miles east of New Bethel Thursday, November 21 after a long illness. Funeral services were held at the residence and later at the New Bethel Baptist Church Saturday afternoon. Interment was at Washington Park Cemetery. John Y Murphy was born in Shelby County, July 18, 1862. He lost his father and mother by death at the age of two years. At this time he was taken into the home of his grandfather, john Murphy, who then resided at the old home place three miles east of New Bethel. He lived and reared his family at this same location. he was united in marriage to Nellie Dake of Shelby County March 24, 1886. Two sons and two daughters were born to this union. They are Lee Roy and Otto Murphy of Indianapolis, Mrs Mabel Messersmith of Castleton and Mrs Olive Pollard of Crown Point. Besides the widow and there children, eight grandchildren survive. Mr Murphy was a member of the Fraternal Order of Red Men and Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He united with Buck Creek Chapel Christian Church at the age of seventeen and several years later transferred his membership to the New Bethel Baptist Church. He was considered a Christian gentleman, upright in character, with genuine integrity and honesty of purpose by those who knew him.
