Martin C. 'Hammer' Burg Sr. of Florence died Friday in Deborah Heart and Lung Center, Browns Mills. He was 80.

Mr. Burg was born in Florence and was the son of the late John and Katherine Burg.

He was a lifelong resident of Florence.

Martin was a retired operating engineer, employed by the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 825 with 36 years of service.

Mr. Burg served his country with honor during the Korean War in the U.S. Army, receiving four Bronze Stars.

Some of his most enjoyable times were spent with his family and in his garden. He was an avid Florence sports enthusiast and particularly liked watching his two grandsons play sports.

Mr. Burg was a member of Sts. Francis and Clare Parish, Holy Assumption Worship Site.

He also was a life member of 52 years of the BPOE 2085, Bordentown; Francis W. Robbins American Legion Post 194, 45-year member; and the Loyal Order of Moose, Mount Holly, 43-year member.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Eloise H. Murphy Burg; his children, Martin C. Burg Jr., Shirley Libertore, Carol Dubow, Marie and Darrell Smith; three grandchildren, Jared and Brett Burg, and Amanda Smith;brother, Frank Burg Sr.; stepchildren, Sharon and David de la Parra, Vickie and Robert Malsbury, and James Ford; and several nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sts. Francis and Clare Parish, Holy Assumption Worship Site, Roebling, with the Rev. Adam Midor officiating. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and from 9:30 a.m. until church departure Wednesday, at Koschek and Porter Funeral Directors, 1115 Hornberger Avenue, Roebling. Interment will be in Holy Assumption Cemetery.
