Leo Frederick Appel, 84, of Cumberland, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Dec. 25, 2000.

Born on Aug. 9, 1916, in Little Orleans, he was the son of the late John Crummbel Appel and Melesta Hester (Martin) Appel.

He was also preceded in death by two sons, George "Fred" Appel and Gary Lamar Appel Sr.; one great-great-grandson, Robert Christopher Appel Price Jr.; one sister, Mildred (Appel) Chaney; and three brothers, Earl Franklin Appel, John Watson Wright Appel and Carl Appel.

Mr. Appel was a retired equipment superintendent for the eastern region of the B&O Railroad (which then became the Chessie System).

Survivors include his wife, Georgie L. (McFarland) Appel; three sons, John Appel and friend Judy Menges, Harold Appel and wife Jeanie, Leo Appel and wife Shirley, all of Cumberland; four daughters, Ina Rae McGregor and husband Galen, Cumberland, Myrtle Gay and husband Chuck, Jefferson, Ga., Carolyn Meagher and husband Carl, Cumberland, Patricia Maddy and husband Charlie, LaVale; two daughters-in-law, Dona Jean Appel, Hancock, Jean Appel, Cumberland; two brothers, Paul Joseph Appel and wife Gladys, Cresaptown, Robert Appel and wife Gerry, Frederick; one brother-in-law, Oberlin "Cub" Chaney, Frostburg; one sister-in-law, Amy Appel, Hancock; 31 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Thursday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Timothy McGregor, grandson of Mr. Appel, officiating.

Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens. Serving as pallbearers will be Gary Lee Appel, Gary Lamar Appel Jr., Timothy McGregor, Craig Appel, Carl Meagher and Ian Maddy. Honorary pallbearers will be Todd Appel and Charles Gay.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the Vicki Via Dotson Memorial Leukemia Foundation, 174 Centennial St., Frostburg, MD 21532, or to the Lighthouse of Hope, Warrior Drive, Cresaptown, MD 21502.
