Anthony was born in 1889 in Erie, Pennsylvania to German immigrants. He was the youngest child and only son of John Adam Thaler (1843 - 1917) and Frances Voelker Thaler (1845 - 1926). Anthony had nine elder sisters. Anthony married Clara Onslow (1889 - 1940). They had five children:

* John A. Thaler (1915 - 1973)
* Joseph C. Thaler (1917 - 2000)
* Elizabeth Thaler Ebert Tatara (1919 - 2000)
* Anthony "Walter" Thaler (19__ - 1997)
* a son (may still be living)

Anthony died in 1946 at age 57.
