Clarence was the eldest son of Charles William Boyd and Lyda A. (Wilkins) Boyd of Belmont County, Ohio. The Boyd family came to Oklahoma from Ohio about 1906.
Clarence's brother, William Lawrence"Bill" Boyd, ended up in Hollywood, California, where he became famous as "Hopalong Cassidy". "Hoppy" made many trips to Tulsa, not only to promote his activities, but also to visit childhood friends and his older brother, Clarence, who lived here until his death in 1968.
