Her daughter, my grandma, told me that Mattie chewed tobacco and once lost a dime which young Mary helped her find. When it was found, Mattie said she was going to buy tobacco with it, and Mary said if she'd known that she wouldn't have helped find it!
Mattie married Will JB Fullar (his name is written on the back of the only photo of him the family has). While Mattie was pregnant with Mary Veola, the brothers found out that he was abusing their sister. They threatened to do him harm if he ever did it again. He went missing before Mary was born and was never seen by the family again. My grandma Mary was hurt by this and talked of it from time to time in her later years, "Why would he leave to never see me?"
At one point, Mattie and Mary lived with Mattie's brother Bud Hailey, keeping house for the bachelor. They shared a 3 bedroom house just a few feet away from the Depot Cafe where Mattie used to work, 1907. "Bud" James Hailey owned a grocery store.
"I remember once where uncle Sam, aunt Gustie & all the kids came over. Stayed 2 or 3 days with us. Fred & Josie came with them, us kids all had a good time together. We all visited the little town, all our hapy times together. The days that's passed & gone. Death has taken some of the Loved ones. Since our child-hood days. Fred, Viola, Cara, McDonald, & uncle Bud & Mother was the first ones to go. They one by one passed on." - wrote Mary on the back of a photo of the Depot Cafe.
Some time later, Mattie married Mr Carter who had a son. They were married when she died of "female trouble". Mary was just 12 years old
