Petra Audelina "Peppie" Ruiz the 5th child of Julian Ruiz and Dolores Valenzuela and one of only four to reach adulthood of possibly 12 children was born at the family home in Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, CA. She was baptized at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Santa Barbara in Oct 1863.
Petra grew up with her four siblings in the area of Sisquoc, Santa Barbara County, CA where her father was a stock raiser. Her other siblings, those who died in infancy, were all buried in the San Ramon Chapel Cemetery, aka Foxen Canyon Cemetery.
In 1900 the family moved to Madera where Petra's father was planning to work for the lumber mills. Petra's grandfather Jesus Valenzuela and some of her uncles were already in the Madera area and urged Petra's father to relocate. The move took two weeks with all their belongings in a wagon. Petra, her ailing mother, her older sister Irene, and their youngest brother Victor rode in the wagon. Young brother Vincent walked with his father while helping with the stock they had on their move. The family settled into the home they built at 200 South O Street. Petra's father had purchased 8 lots on this street with one of the lots staying in the family until 1998.
When Petra was 32 she married for the first time... Victor Procopio Medina became her husband in Madera in Sept 1919. He was an auto mechanic and then later worked for the City of Madera. They lived on South O Street for years then finally moved to North A Street until they divorced in about 1932.
By 1935 Petra was living near Hollister with her sister and brother-in-law Irene and Pete Ruiz, along with George Acosta, Petra's second husband. By 1940 they were all living together in Watsonville, Santa Cruz, CA where Pete was a bartender and George was an auto mechanic.
Petra worked as a seamstress for the famous Ford's Dept Store in Watsonville for many years. She and her sister Irene, both widows continued to live in the "pink house" on San Juan Rd until her Parkinson's disease forced them to move to Fresno to live at the home of their nephew and his family for the last 8 months of Petra's life.
