DR GEORGE EDMUNDS SANFORD DIES SATURDAY
Old Carthage boy is brought home for burial Monday
George Edmunds Sanford died at the Vanderbilt University hospital, Nashville Tenn. Saturday, April 3, 1926 of pneumonia.
Dr. Sanford was the son of Dr. Frank and July (Edmunds)
Sanford (now Mrs A. N. Cherill) and he was born in
Carthage, Feb. 12 1877 and grew to manhood in this city.
He graduated from Carthage High school in 1894. He enlisted in the 30th U.S.Inf. and served in the Philippines for two years, being mustered out in 1901.
His services was on the Island of Luzon. While in the service he contracted tuberculosis against which he struggled in his business life, and which made him an easy
victim of pneumonia.
Returning for the service, he located in Birmingham, Ala.,
where he was married to Miss Cora Hawson. He has been engaged in selling x-ray supplies to physicians and has
been very successful, and carried the title of Doctor
among his professional friends.
Dr. Sanford was a member of St. Cyprians Church, Carthage
and was the first acolyte who served in the present church. He had a bright, lovable temperament, and was well liked by all who knew him, and held a firm hold on the affections of those who knew and loved him best.
When he fell ill, his people in Chicago were notified
and Mr. Sidney Cherrill went to him immediately, arriving in Nashville, Thursday and was able to visit with him.
He was conscious and eager to visit up to a half hour
of his death.
The body was brought to Carthage and taken to the Ostrich Home. The family were entertained by Mr. and, A.W.O"Harra.
Those in the funeral party were, Mr. and Mrs A.N. Cherrill, Mr Sidney Cherrill, Mrs Blanche Cherrill of
Chicago, Mrs Fred Miller of Dallas and Mrs Cora Sanford of Chicago.
The funeral was held at St. Cyprians Church Monday afternoon at 1:30, Dr. J.M.D Davidson of Macomb officiating. The interment was at Moss Ridge under the auspices of Phillip Hartzell Post American Legion,
Commander J.Guy Helfrich presenting the ritul very
impressively. The following world war veteans formed
escort and firing squad, Commander Edw. B Hackett,
Color Sargent, Forrest Louden musicians Jerry Nutt
and C.E. Hubbard, Major Omer, Carl Ank, John Culkin, Orville Geddes, Guy Helfrich, John Kearney, B.M. McCarty, Bertus Ufkes.
