VADA M. LADY, 92, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Tuesday evening, September 27, 2011 at William Newton Hospital.

Born on May 2, 1919 in Council Hill, Oklahoma, she was the daughter of Jefferson and Vada (Rice) Phillips. She was raised in Council Hill and later Wellsville, Kansas, graduating as Class Salutatorian in 1937.

She was united in marriage to Roland E. "Rod" Lady on September 18, 1937 in Wellsville, Kansas. The couple moved to Burden, Kansas in 1949 where they made their home until 1963 when they moved to Winfield. Mr. Lady preceded her in death on June 18, 1986.

Her dedication and love for the Cowley County Fair showed in her 45 years of service. She loved working the fairs and enjoyed meeting all the people. In 1980 she was elected President of the fair auxiliary and held that position until her retirement. In 2003 she had the honor of being inducted into the Kansas Fairs Association Hall of Fame.

Vada was a member of the Walnut Valley Quilt Guild. Her family was blessed with handsewn quilts many times over. She loved working outside in her flower and vegetable garden, mowing and trimming her yard. She was a faithful University of Kansas fan and never missed watching the games on television. Vada loved traveling whether in the camper with her husband or on a tour bus with her daughters and daughter-in-laws. During her lifetime, she saw most of the United States.

Her family includes: Her sons: Richard Lady and wife Kathy of Independence, MO, and their children, Lori Arnold, Roger Lady and Randy Lady; James Lady and wife Ann of Arlington, TX; Her daughters: Judy Lawson and husband John of Burden, KS, and their children Robert and David Lawson and Sherri McNutt; and Sandra Gurnee and husband Dennis of Endora, MO, and their children, Jeff, Scott and Michelle Gurnee; Her great-grandchildren: Jackie, John and Cheyanne Arnold; Chaz, Alexandra and Zane Lady; Justin, Kyle and Kevin Lawson; Jacob, Bryant and Tyson Lawson; Katie, Karrie, Kallie and Kelsie McNutt; and Her great-greatgrandchildren: Bridgette, Tripp and Remy Lawson. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph and Kenneth Phillips and 2 infants; her sister, Lois Jane Foster, and her great-granddaughter, Becky Arnold.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, October 1, 2011 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M., Friday, September 30, 2011. The family will greet friends from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M., that evening.

A memorial has been established in Vada's name for the Cowley County Fair Auxiliary. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
