William A. Trefz, age 95, a Manitowoc resident, died Monday, November 25, 1996,
at North Ridge Medical and Rehabilitation Center, Manitowoc.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 27, 1996, at Bethany
Ev. Lutheran Church. Rev. Robert Kujawski and Rev. Bruce McKenny will officiate
at the service with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
Bill was born June 28, 1901, at Rockford, Ill., son of the late Theodore and
Louise Hammer Trefz. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison with
a B.A. degree in Industrial Education and later received his Master's Degree from
Stout Institute at Menomonee. In 1928, he was a machinist teacher at the Manitowoc
Vocational School. During World War II he was supervisor for Manpower Training and
the National Defense Training Program in Manitowoc. In 1945, he was promoted to
Trade and Industry Training Coordinator at Manitowoc Vocational School. Bill
retired in 1966. In January 1983, he was one of 20 Wisconsinites admitted to the
New Wisconsin Apprenticeship Hall of Fame, Department of Industry Labor and Human
Relations Madison. He married Mildred A. Krohn in 1930 at Oconomowoc, and she
preceded him in death in 1955. He married Ruth Medaus Umnus in 1958 in Manitowoc
and she preceded him in death in 1964(sic). He then married Hertha Alfson April 2,
1988, and Hertha preceded him in death October 1, 1996. Bill was a charter member
of Bethany Ev. Lutheran Church and has served on the church council. He was a life
member of the Manitowoc Senior Center, the Manitowoc Mens Garden Club, AARP Chapter
#812, and Wisconsin and Manitowoc Retired Teachers Association.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ralph T. and Betty Trefz, Manitowoc;
three granddaughters, Kathy and Charles Behnke, Joan Kersten, all of Manitowoc,
Barbara Lefky, Maple Plain, Minn.; three grandsons, Kenneth and Robert Trefz Jr.,
Madison, Michael Trefz, Minneapolis, Minn.; three great-grandson, Jason and Joey
Kersten, Brandon Behnke, all of Manitowoc; a step-son, Donald Umnus and his wife
Arlene and their family, Manitowoc; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends
also surivie. He was also preceded in death by a son, Robert Trefz in 1994, and by
two brothers and three sisters.
Relatives and friends may call at Bethany Ev. Lutheran Church from 10 a.m. Wednesday
until the time of service.
