James Sherman Chard was born in Lawrence County, Ohio on December 20, 1835 and died at his home north of Lucas on March 18, 1912; age 76 years 2 months and 27 days. He immigrated with his parents (William and Mary)from Ohio to Henderson County, Illinois in 1844 and lived there until 1873 when he moved to Kansas locating in Lincoln County; living there and in Russell County until his death. He married Susan Jane Endicott on January 24, 1861 in Henderson County, Illinois. To this union were born 13 children, 8 of whom survive to mourn their loss. They are James M.,David, Harbet, William, Henry, and Ida C. Reece all of Lucas, Nealy (Sarah Cornelia)Miller of Manhattan, and Josie Olson of Luray. He also leaves two brothers and one sister, M.D. Chard of Savannah, Missouri, Albert Chard of St. Joseph, Missouri, and Martha Ackerman of Guthrie, Oklahoma. Funeral services will be conducted from the U.B. Church by Rev. Lee, Friday afternoon and the remains laid to rest in the Lucas Cemetery.
Sarah Cornelia (Chard) Miller is buried in the Delhi Cemetery.
