His obituary in a local newspaper records he was born November 25th, 1848 at "Bedford, Maine." The 1900 through 1920 US Censuses record his birth at Maine in November 1848, about 1848 and about 1849 respectively. The 1860 through 1870 Censuses, however, record his birth at Canada "about" 1849 and the 1880 Census at Canada, about 1850. We find a Baptismal Register entry at St. Edward the Confessor Roman Catholic Church at Westport, Leeds Co., Ontario dated January 7th, 1849 recording the birth of James David Bowland November 25th, 1848 to James Bowland and Catherine Badre (Bedard) of "Bedford" referring to Bedford Township which is immediately adjacent to the West of North Crosby Twp. where Westport is located, but in Frontenac Co. This Township is where many of the extended Bedard Family re-settled in the mid 1840s after receiving land grants in Lanark County after the war of 1812.
