Formerly of Chicago, Bill was a resident of the Johnsburg area since 1953. He was employed as a truck driver for Coca-Cola for several years. For the majority of his career, he worked as a dispatcher for Standard Oil Petroleum in Elk Grove for over 35 years, retiring in 1986.
A member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, he was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters while at St. Benedicts Church.
In 1955, he was a founding member of McHenry Township Fire Protection District Company 2. He was also an active member of the Johnsburg Rescue Squad for many years. Other community activities included membership in the Johnsburg Community Club, starting the St. John's School Booster Club, being a founding member of the Johnsburg Community District 12 Booster Club, serving as a youth coach for baseball and softball leagues; and playing on the Hetterman 16 inch softball league. He was an avid fisherman, and enjoyed his summers in St. Germain in northern Wisconsin and his winters in Siesta Key, Florida.
He will be remembered for often remarking that his first accomplishment in life was his marriage to Joanne and his second accomplishment in life was his children. During retirement, he very much enjoyed time he was able to spend with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Joanne; five children, Mary Jo Lemke of Johnsburg, Kathleen (William) Betke Jr. of Johnsburg, Robert (Sheri) Haag of Johnsburg, Patti (Mark) Fluger of Twin Lakes, and Michael (Missy) Haag of Rockford; his grandchildren, Sara (Andy) Azzaline, David Lemke, Bill Lemke, Jody (Lee) Masterson, Jason Betke, Joanne Betke, Bill Betke III. Kevin Betke, Heather Haag, Brian Haag, Katie Fluger, Rebecca Fluger, and Jonny Fluger; a sister, Claire (the late John) Hofbauer; and a sister-in-law, Doris Haag.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, William Haag Jr. On July 9, 1982; five brothers, Peter (Lorraine) Haag, Alex (Peg) Haag, Alphonse (Frances) Haag, Francis "Varney" (Laura) Haag, and Leonard Haag; and by three sisters, Barbara (Ernest) Zorn, Emily (Edward) Connelly, and Catherine (Walter) Fleischmann.
The visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, March 6, 2006, at the George R. Justen & Son Funeral Home, 3519 W. Elm St., McHenry, IL.
Visitation will resume on Tuesday, March 7 at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until prayers are said at 10:15 a.m., prior to leaving in procession for the 11 a.m. funeral Mass at St. John the Baptist Church.
Interment will be in St. John the Baptist Church Cemetery, Johnsburg.
