The death of William Beattie, one of Cooperstown's most beloved citizens, occurred early Wednesday morning at the Mary Imogene Bassett hospital where he had been a patient since August 13th. Mr. Beattie was the son of George and Jane (Wilson) Beattie and was born in County Longford, Ireland, January 1, 1874. After his schooling he joined the British Army and served for a time in India. Coming to America in his twenty-first year, he was employed for a short time at Mount Vernon, New York. When he came to Cooperstown in 1898 he secured a position with G. M. Grant and Company, a well-known firm of retail grocers. In 1906, Mr. Beattie formed a partnership with William P. Doubleday purchasing the business of their employers. On June 15, 1916, his partner retired and he conducted the business individually until November 20, 1920. Then he became associated with the U. S. Hoffman Machinery Company, for which he acted for several years as sales manager. The interests of this corporation were widespread and his duties took him to many parts of the country. At various times his home was at Atlanta, Ga., Charlotte, N.C. and New York City.
For some time before its dedication in 1939 he was associated with the National Baseball Museum and Hall of Fame. He became its Curator and was well-known and highly respected by everyone in Baseball from Commissioner Landis to the smallest boy of the sandlot.
Mr. Beattie was united in marriage on June 7, 1904, with Miss Linda Waite Davidson, who survives, together with one sister, Miss Clara Beattie of New York City. The funeral service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be made in the Davidson plot in Lakewood cemetery.
