Died at the Rutten farmstead.
Devils Lake inter-ocean., January 19, 1900,
Death of Postmaster F. Rutten
On Friday, January 12, 1900, the grimm messenger of Death entered the home of Frank Rutten, at Rutten postoffice, and plucked from its midst a loving husband and fond father.
Just about one year ago deceased was stricken with kidney trouble and since that time suffered much pain, but this he meekly bore with Christian fortitude. All that medical science could do was resorted to, but all of no earthly avail, and surrounded by his beloved wife and family his spirit took flight to that land where suffering and sorrow, sickness and pain will be no more. He is now enjoying "That rest that remaineth for the children of God."
The grief-stricken wife and children have the ganuine sympathy of all in this their hour of sad bereavement.
Deceased was born at Hillensberg, Germany, on March 21, 1842, and came to this country August, 1963, locating at Belle Plain, purchased 120 acres of land and engaged in farming for seven years; in March 1885, he moved to what was then called Devils Lake, but now Rutten, and took up a homestead, tree claim and three-quarter pre-emption. On December 26, 1864, he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Maria Meuwissen, who survives him.
Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Rutten, nine of whom are still living. They are: Mrs. Katie Guettler, Cologne, Minn.; Herman, of this city; Louis and Frank M., of Noonan township; Mrs. Gertrude Leduc, of Noonan township; Mrs. Lizzie Guettler, Cologne, Minn.; Henry, Joseph and Miss Annie, living at home. The deceased children are Mrs. Mary Leduc, died March 3rd, 1889, and Miss Lena, died April 9th, 1889.
Funeral services were held at St. Benedict church, Rutten at 9 o'clock Monday morning, Rev. Father Plascides officiating, after which remains were consigned to their last resting place in St. Benedict's cemetery.
Mr. Rutten was postmaster at Rutten postoffice since the fall of 1886.
