Bio, concised by me, was written by Deacon Gil's wife, Mabel Egan Gil:

Joe was the son of the late John and Luisa Muscani Gil. He passed away from congestive heart failure. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mabel Egan Gil, 9 children, Maria, Joseph, John Mark, Anthony, Teresa, Eileen, Kathleen, Christopher Jeremiah and Elizabeth and 15 grandchildren.
Deacon Gil was born in Caracas, Venezuela and moved to New York with his parents as a child. He studied agriculture at Farmingdale College on LI and continued his education at NYU, where he earned a degree in community organization. After marriage, Joe and Mabel returned to Venezuela to direct a model farm which was distributed to low-income farmers. Returning to NYC, Joe worked in a settlement house in East Harlem, Casita Maria, working with youth gangs. He directed the East Harlem area services for NYC. During this period, he learned much about empowering people to take a role in changing their lives and helping their community. He was also director of the Vista program for East Harlem. In 1972, the Gils moved to Albany.
Joe's concern for the poor was a lifelong passion and brought this compassion for the poor into his work as a permanent deacon in the Albany Roman Catholic Diocese where he was ordained in 1976. He worked with migrant farm workers and among the Spanish-speaking parishioners of St. Patrick's Church, Albany. He also served at St. Vincent de Paul's Parish as a liturgical minister as well as developing a farmer's market and the parish food pantry. He was also employed with the NYS Corrections Department as an Affirmative Action Officer. After retiring, he worked with the NYS Legislature under Asssemblyman Angelo Del Torto.

He will be remembered by those closest to him for his love of life, his love of people, and especially his love of his family.

*******
My notes, by Karen: Joe was surrounded and loved by many well-respected Christians and was known personally by Mother Teresa, Dorothy Day (co-founder of the Catholic Worker Movement) and he was the sister in law of Sisters Kathleen and Eileen Egan, co-authors of "Reflexiones con la Madre Teresa." Sr. Eileen Egan (1911-Oct.7,2000) was the co-founder of Pax Christi, USA and was responsible for bringing Mother Teresa to the United States.

Even though he was a premature baby who only survived infancy because he was incubated in a lighted chicken coop in Venezuela and was blind in one eye most of his life, Deacon Gil had no limitations. He sits on the right hand of God.
