MAN KILLED BY TRACTOR
Leon Lingenfelter, Late Employed by Knox County, Who Met Death in Illinois, Buried Here.
Leon Linkenfelter [sic], 39, formerly of here, was instantly killed while at work Saturday morning at the Truax-Traer Coal Company mine near Canton, Ill. Mr. Lingenfelter was run over by a tractor. Following the accident the body was removed to a funeral home there.
According to The Canton Daily Ledger, Claude McMullen, operator of the tractor, said he believed Mr. Lingenfelter was standing behind the tractor to escape the sharp wind that was blowing at that time, and before he realized what had happened, the tractor, which weighed approximately fifteen tons, had run over him and pinned him to the ground. Gene Long, superintendent of the mine, told a representative of The Sentinel Tuesday morning that "It was just one of those things that could not be helped."
Funeral services were held in Canton, Ill., and the body brought here for burial in the new St. Joseph cemetery with services at the grave conducted by the Rev. Terence Mullins at 11 o'clock Tuesday morning.
Mr. Lingenfelter was born and raised in and around Edina, and on Jan. 6, 1937, was married to Miss May Penn, daughter of the late James and Mrs. Penn of Lewistown.
Shortly after their marriage, Mr. Lingenfelter began work for the county here as a truck driver, and in that capacity remained until about 1940, when they went to Macomb, Ill., where he worked for a bakery. Shortly after this he moved to Cuba, Ill., where he last resided, and began work at the mine near Canton.
He is survived by the widow, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Lingenfelter, and two sisters, Rita Mae, Mrs. Charles A. Preuss, and Jaunita, Mrs. W. L. Matkin, both of St. Louis.
Those attending the services from a distance besides those before mentioned were: Mrs. N. N. Arehart, Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Myers, Wilsey Matkins and Mrs. Cleatis Lewis, all of St. Louis; Mr. and Mrs. Russell Penn, Mr. and Mrs. William Penn and Lloyd Penn and Herb Evans of Lewistown; Mr. and Mrs. Lee Shearer, Gene Long, superintendent of the mines, and a group of fellow workers of Cuba, Ill.
