James Alfred McCready, 78, of Westminster, formerly of Selbyville, Del., died Friday, Sept. 30, 2011, at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster.

Born March 11, 1933, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Milton R. and Anna E. Anderson McCready. Twice married, he was predeceased by Vivian Jones McCready, who died March 15, 1972, and by Alice Breed McCready, who died Dec. 5, 2008.

He served as an aviations electronic Chief Petty Officer in the Navy for 21 years. After retirement, he was the evening supervisor at RETS Technical School. He was a very patriotic man who enjoyed fishing, shuffle bowling, history and was an avid reader. He had been a member of the Catonsville and Ocean Pines Moose Lodges, the Ocean City Elk Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7234 and St. Luke's by the Sea Catholic Church in Ocean City.

Surviving are children and spouses Zane D. McCready, of Catonsville, Dawn Archambault Walker and Linn A. McCready, both of Westminster, Crystal S. Harvey, of Hampton, Va., and Janene M. Balser, of Sykesville; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 p.m. until the time of service, 8 p.m. Monday at Pritts Funeral Home & Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster. A funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with Deacon Paul Cooke, from St. John's Catholic Church, officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.
