John Galloway was born in Herkimer County, New York on December 2, 1786. He
lived in that county a few years, when his father, Captain James Galloway,
moved to Wayne County, and settled in Palmyra, in company with two other
pioneers, General Swift and General White. Captain James Galloway's son,
James Galloway, now (1903) resides on the old farm. These three families were
among the first settlers of that town. John Galloway was then a small boy,
and made the trip from Herkimer County to Palmyra in a "bag", with his older
sister, Hannah. His parents took a large sack, and put his sister on one side
and himself on the other, and hung them over the back of a horse, just as an old-fashioned doctor did his saddlebags. He lived in Palmyra, with his parents, until he was married, when he purchased a large farm, and lived on it until the spring of 1824, when he emigrated to Michigan, sailing from Buffalo to Detroit on the first steamboat on the lake, and the first trip ever made by the boat, "Pioneer", arriving in Detroit about the 1st of May. He left his family in Detroit until he went to Pontiac, purchased a new farm and a yoke of oxen, and returned to Detroit and moved his family upon the land. He lived there about eleven years, when he sold out, went to Toledo, Ohio, and bought a large farm, where he lived for several years, when he again sold out and purchased another large farm in Raisinville, Monroe County, Michigan, where he lived until his death, October 14, 1851. About the year 1805 he married Miss Elizabeth Cornell, of Palmyra, New York, by whom he had four sons. Mrs. Elizabeth Galloway was born in New York about the year 1787, and died in Palmyra, Wayne County, New York on March 17, 1818.(Illustrated History and Biographical Record of Lenawee County.)

Aged 66 yrs. John and Alinda Galloway settled near Pontiac in 1826. They removed to Monroe county, settled on the farm in Raisinville on the north side of the River Raisin, ten miles above the city of Monroe, in March 1840. They kept a hotel, known as the John Galloway Inn, for five years and passed through all hardships incident to clearing a farm in a new country. Their pioneer neighbors were A. P. Taylor, A. B. Bentley, Michael Warner, A. Barnaby and Jacob Brown.

John was first married to Elizabeth Cornell and they had four boys. (James born abt 1807, Thomas 1809, George 1814 and Almon 1816.) John then married Alinda Drake on 14 Jun 1818 and had at least nine children. List of children from researcher on-line: Daniel Timothy, Lucinda, Archer, Leonard, Albert, Barnabas, Lafayette, Elizabeth, Jerome, Alina and James. (Selective additional information from contributor 47131327).
