When the Civil War broke out, Asa Franklin Burlingame (Jr.) was probably living with or near his parents in Miller county working on the family farm. He enlisted and served in company H of the Osage County Home Guard. After his 3 month service was completed, he enlisted for 3 years on October 12, 1861, to serve in the Union army. On January 10, 1862, he was mustered into Company D of the 25th Missouri Infantry regiment by Lieut. William Wherry at Castle Rock, Missouri. He was 23 years old, 5' 8 1/2" tall, with black hair, black eyes and a dark complexion. Captain L. D. Maynard was his company commanding officer, who regarded Asa enough to assign him as the third ranking Sergeant in the company.
