PETER LEVERGOOD (1785-1860) was the son of Peter Levergood (Liebengut) and Phoebe Yocum. He was born 27 May 1785 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. On 1 Jan 1805 he married Susannah Rodfong (Rothfang) and they had 9 children, 6 of whom grew to maturity: Catherine "Kittie", Jacob, Phoebe, Lucinda, Peter and Mary. He moved to Johnstown (then Conemaugh City") in 1811 and bought the plotted lots that Joseph Johns had originally laid out from John Holliday. He served as Cambria County Commissioner in 1818. Upon the death of his first wife, he married Catherine Fite. After her death, he married Louisa H. Spottswood who survived him. He became a very wealthy man during his lifetime through his real estate transactions. He was a dedicated supporter of the Lutheran Church in Johnstown and donated lands for the Lutheran Cemetery (sometimes called the Levergood Family Cemetery). He died at age 75 and was buried in the family burial ground between his first two wives. After the disastrous Johnstown Flood of 1889 which swept away the cemetery, including his gravestone, his body was removed in 1892 to Grandview Cemetery.
