John Henkel was the oldest son of John and Marion Henkel. After graduating from St. Peter's College in Jersey City in 1942 at the age of 19, he became an officer in the United States Navy during World War II. Lt. Henkel was an executive officer on L.S.T. 375 and participated in the landings at Sicily, Salerno and Normandy. At the D-Day invasion, his ship carried the headquarters of the U.S. 4th Infantry Division to France. After the war, he married Peggy Noonan and worked for a financial institution in Newark, N.J.
