She was the daughter of Thomas J. and Catherine Rice. Thomas was a merchant in Keokuk, Lee, Iowa. Mary can be found in the 1860 Lee County, Iowa census. She had siblings: William b. 1856; Charles A. b. 1859; and Harry b. 1861. After her father died about 1862, her mother married J. B. Billings, a Dry Goods Merchant in Keokuk. William, Mary, Charles and Harry can be found living with them in the 1870 census. J. B. has become disabled by 1880 and he and Catherine along with sons, Charles and Harry, are living in a boarding house in Keokuk, Lee, Iowa.
Mary married John Daniel Miller Hamilton on February 28, 1878 in Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa.
