According to Dr. E. Russ Williams' book "Founding Families of the Ouachita Valley", Sherwood was the son of Elijah and Sara Ann Cowan. His middle name was Cambell. He was a Confederate Veteran. His Booth's Records entry is as follows:

Pvt. Co. K. 31st Regt. La. Infty. En. April 14th, 1862, Monroe, La.

His widow's [Margaret A. Rawles Cowan] Confederate pension application states he died at Lapine, LA "Killed by fall from buggy". She also states they were married in Natchitoches Parish on November 12, 1871.
