Tubby was a mutt my family adopted before I was even born. They were living in New Mexico in the mid 1960's. I am told he already had his name when my Grandpa brought him home. Not sure how the dog got such a name. I would have changed it but I was not even born yet. My Mom was in her early teens when they adopted the pooch.
My Grandmother always told me this about Tubby: he was so black, you would only notice his eyes which were striking.
Tubby was always very protective of his home especially my mom. He slept with her at night. My mom still remembers him. Tubby seemed to have been very close to her. My Grandfather was in the Army so they were in a location for a year or two. The time came for the family to pack and leave New Mexico. Their orders were for Louisiana. They could not bring Tubby with them so they had to say good bye to Tubby. A friend of the family checked at the shelter to see if Tubby was still there but withing a week he had been adopted. I hope he found his forever home that time. I will never understand why my grandfather got dogs, knowing they would have to say good bye in just a short time. I feel terrible for my Mom, having to say good bye to her beloved dog, every time they had to go to another military base.
No photos of Tubby exist which I find sad and cannot wrap my mind around it.
