NORFOLK - Mary Roberta Byrd Galbraith passed away peacefully at her home in Norfolk, June 22, 2011. Born Dec. 27, 1915 in Hanover County, Virginia. She was the middle child of five daughters and one son of Mr. William Wallace Byrd and Mrs. Suzie Pierce Byrd. Roberta married Dr. Leonard Meredith Galbraith of Richmond, Va., in 1942, relocating to Norfolk for his medical practice and raising their family there. Her family, her church, and friends were the abiding interests of her life. She was a life-long member of Larchmont Baptist Church, always volunteering and working behind the scenes. She was a wonderful mother and caregiver, her children and friends will miss her humor and kindness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, her son Robert, her sisters, Katherine Ross, Edmonia Beasley, Frances Shoul, Edith Haller, and her brother, William Byrd. She is survived by her daughter, Paula L. Galbraith of Norfolk; a son, Wayne M. Galbraith and his wife Jane of Montpelier, Va., and their son John M. Galbraith of Arlington, Va. The family will receive friends at a visitation Friday, June 24, between 11 a.m. until noon at H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, Colonial Avenue. Burial will be a private in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Galbraith Family Scholarship c/o Averett University, 420 W. Main St., Danville, VA 24541.
