U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the Indiana University in 1870 and from its law department in 1871, was admitted to the bar in 1872 and commenced to practice law in Bloomington, Indiana. He was prosecuting attorney for the tenth judicial circuit of Indiana (1875-79), a member of the Indiana State House of Representatives in 1879, a member of the board of trustees of Indiana University (1879-97) and judge of the tenth judicial circuit of Indiana, serving (1883-96). In 1897, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-fifth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1905. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he served as judge of the tenth circuit of Indiana (1914-20) and practice law until his death.
