Thelia Luedecke was born July 2, 1921, in Schleicher County, Texas, to John Herbert and Lizzie Smith Luedecke. She grew up on the family farm, the middle child of eight. She attended schools in Eldorado, but graduated from high school in Portales, N.M.
She married her great love and friend, Johno Mayo, on Aug. 17, 1941. They lived and farmed in Schleicher County, but moved to San Angelo when Johno was drafted. After the war she and Johno partnered in Cactus Oil. In 1951, with his usual good timing, Johno decided to move back to Eldorado to the family farm. The great drought hit and the ensuing years were hard. Though money was scarce, she and Johno were true helpmeets, built their family and home on love and laughter and always welcomed friends and family.
She worked for Southwest Texas Electric Coop and Schleicher County. For 17 years she was the secretary to the Superintendent of schools. Many teachers, especially coaches and students appreciated the assistance she gave them. After her retirement, she and Johno ran their cotton-buying business until his ill-health prevented their continuing. Thelia was a very strong woman, full of joy and kindness. A woman of strong faith, she loved and took pleasure in her church. She was interested in the world and people around her. Though a lifelong yellow dog Democrat, she was open-minded and enjoyed new ideas. She and Johno were the best of parents to their children and grandchildren and the truest of friends to others. Their lives gave us many wonderful memories to hold dear.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her partner, Johno; brothers Alvin and John Luedecke; and sisters Elta Redford, Sammye Pruett, Corene Draper and Alma Corbell. She is survived by her daughter, Sammye Ruppeck of Christoval; son Johnny Mayo Jr. and wife Carolyn of Eldorado; granddaughter Jessica Ruppeck of Austin; grandson Michael Mayo of Fort Worth; "adopted" family Dean, Vickie and Corie Williams; sister Edna King of Hobbs, N.M.; many great and good friends; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their gratitude to VistaCare Hospice and the many other health care givers over the years. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to Concho Valley Home for Girls/Children's Emergency Shelter or a charity of choice. Graveside service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 10, 2011, in the Eldorado Cemetery with the celebration of life service to follow at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev.
