John F. Waggoner, prominent merchant and business man of Columbia, died in a local hospital after a brief illness. He was 59 years of age; his death came as a distinct shock to his friends throughout this parish as well as adjoining parishes.

Funeral services for Mr. Waggoner were conducted by the Magnolia Camp No. 66 Woodmen of the World, of which he was an active member. Services were held at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church west of Columbia with Rev. G. W. Wall, pastor of the Mt. Pleasant church, Rev. S. A. Seegers, pastor othe Columbia Methodist Church, and Rev. J. D. Kitchingham, pastor of the Grayson Baptist Church, in charge.

A. C. Banks had charge of the song service and the Urania drill team Woodmen of the World assisting funeral services with the members of the local lodge.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday and interment was made in a nearby cemetery.

Pallbearers were Marvin Lafferty, Fred Lafferty, Grady Mills, Grady Poole, Ned Bailes and Arvel Harris.

Approximately 250 attended the funeral Monday, showing the high esteem Mr. Waggoner was held in by the people of this parish.

Mr. Waggoner was born in Ouachita parish but had resided in Caldwell parish many years. He first settled on a farm in the Mt. Pleasant community, but for the last 18 years has been residing in and out of Columbia. He had been operating a store o Highway 165 in Chicks Addition for the past ten years.

He is survived by his wife; a son, J. W. Waggoner of Dallas, Texas; a stepdaughter, Helen; two sisters, Mrs. H. H. Brannen of Breckinridge, Texas, and S. W. Waggoner and Allen Waggoner, both of Odessa, Texas. All brothers and sisters were present for the funeral with the exception of Allen Waggoner, who could not be reached.

He is also survived by two grandchildren.

The funeral was under the direction of the Riser Funeral Home.
