Loraine Alice Novotny Olson, 96, died Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at Thief River Care Center, Thief River Falls, MN, where she had lived since January 2011.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 AM, Saturday, October 8, 2011 at St. Bernard's Church, Thief River Falls, MN with Father Rick Lambert presiding. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Badger, MN.

Visitation be be at 5-7 PM, Friday, October 7, 2011 at Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls, MN and for one hour prior to the service at the church Saturday.

Loraine Alice Novotny Olson was born January 13, 1915 to Mike and Martha (Lubinsky) Novotny at home in Skagen Township in Roseau County, MN. Loraine was baptized in the Catholic Faith growing up. She attened a one-room classroom, walking l mile to grade school and 4 miles to high school. At age 17, Loraine started teaching with only 1 year of training at Warroad, MN, taking at home correspondence and extension courses.

Loraine married Syrial Olson on June 20, 1936. Syrial was in the Navy when they married and since jobs were plentiful in WWII, she went to Los Angeles to work as a riveter at North Anerican Aircraft and a burner at Consolidated Shipyards. After the war they farmed near Roseau.

At age 43, Loraine decided to go to college and obtain a Bachelor of Science degree. She taught the 2nd grade at Northrup Elementary for the nexy 20 years, retiring at age 65, saying her greatest reward in life was her children's smiling faces.

Loraine had many interests in life. She liked violins, wild flowers, animals, birds and John Denver. She enjoyed watching TV, talking politics and caring for her animals in her home.

Loraine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Syrial; sisters, Helen (John) Kappes, Margaret (Lyle) Helgeland; brothers, Roy and Robert; niece, Marjorie Keller and nephew, Phillip Helgeland.

She is survived by sisters-in-law, Delores Novotny of Detroit Lakes, MN and Gladys Novotny, Billings, MT; and several nieces and nephews. Also special friends and care givers, the Lund Family.
