Harold Harvey was my mother's uncle but he was also like an uncle to me. He was married to my maternal grandmother's only sister, Genevieve. We called her Aunt Jenny. She was a character.

Uncle Harold served in WWII. He made such a handsome soldier. Somewhere along the line he sustained a back injury that caused him pain for the rest of his life.

Uncle Harold and Aunt Jenny had one child: a daughter, my mother's cousin Darlene. She was just like her parents: what my mother always called "a real love." Darlene was a love.

In later years Uncle Harold and Aunt Jenny reveled in their role as grandparents to Darlene's children.

When I was little Uncle Harold was the one who could always get me to go to sleep. He'd rock me gently and off I'd go to dreamland. He would never move as long as I was sleeping. Nobody could get him to put me down.

That's the kind of person he was: gentle, kind, loving, patient, and generous with whatever he had to give, if only his time and strong arms to hold you.

I can't believe he's been gone so long. I miss him.
