M. Byron Morton , 94 , of the Otterbein Lebanon Home and formerly of Vandalia , died Sunday , Aug. 5
He was a 1929 graduate of Wittenberg University and received a master's degree from Ohio State University.
In 1929 , he became a teacher and coach in the Butler Township Schools and later became principal and superintendent of the school system, retiring in 1956 to become superintendent of the Montgomery County School System until 1958.From 1958 to 1967 he served as the assistant state superintendent for schools for the state of Ohio and in 1967 he became associate professor at the University of Dayton Graduate School of Education until his retirement in 1990.
His career spanned a total of 61 years in the field of education.He served as an arbitrator for school boards and education associations throughout Ohio and established Vandalia Butler Memorial Stadium in honor of Vandalia-Butler Township area veterans killed in service to their country.
He was a member of the Vandalia United Methodist Church , charter member of the Vandalia Lions Club , 32nd Degree Mason and was active in numerous other professional organizations.He served on the Vandalia City Charter Commission and was founder and former president of the Western Ohio Education Association.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years , Glenna B. Morton , in 1997 ; daughter , Rebecca M. ; brother , Delmer Morton ; and three sisters , Lorna Swartz , Edith Bahner , and Amelia Ziff.
He is survived by daughter and son-in-law , Kathleen and Robert Shellhause of Lebanon ; son and daughter-in-law , Dr. Fred and Sue Morton of Dubuque , Iowa ; two sisters , Miriam Champion of Perry , Ohio and Cyd Korsant of Sherman , Conn. ; two brothers , C. Emerson Morton of Vandalia and Norven Morton of Hollywood , Fla. ; five grandchildren , R. Alan and wife Rebecca Shellhause of London , Ohio , Steven M. and wife Annetta Shellhause of Florence , Ky. , Mary Ann Holt of Lebanon and fiancé Anthony Penley of Union , Ky. , Dr. Barry C. and wife Elizabeth Morton of Denver , Colo. , and Ty and wife Heather Morton of Thornton , Colo. ; two foster granddaughters , Jacqueline and Khukhi Tabane of Dubuque , Iowa ; sister-in-law , Virginia Duncan of Troy ; 10 great-grandchildren , Dana and Bonnie Lockwood , Steven and Brett Holt , Jessica , Daniel , Kurt , and Ryan Shellhause , and Thyme and Iain Morton ; and numerous other relatives and friends.
It was Mr. Morton's wish that his body be cremated. Memorial services were held Saturday morning , Aug. 11 at the Otterbein Lebanon Chapel with the Rev. Roger Braun officiating and Saturday afternoon , Aug. 11 at the Vandalia United Methodist Church with the Rev. Thomas Weeks officiating.
