Alverta G. Harrvey Hargis was born in Chase County, Neb, in a covered wagon on Aug. 14, 1908, and departed this life at her home with her loving family by her side on Dec. 3, following a long illness at the age of 92. She grew up in a sod house until 16 when the family moved into a frame house. She was born to Albert George Harvey and Matilda Jane Streeter Underhill Harvey. She was one of 10 children. She attended school, grades 1-8 at Sunnyside School Primary and Plainview in Wauneta, Neb. She was married to Thomas J. Nichols on Oct. 17, 1925. To this union, six children were born. On Oct. 4, 1954, she married her best friend, Philip R. Hargis at Holyoke, Colo. She loved quilting and baking apple pies, and attended Dogwood Nazarene Church for 53 years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother and was loved by all. She is survived by her husband, Philip; three daughters, Very Berry of Albany, Ga., Violet and Lyle Towne of North Platte, Neb; and Joyce and Junior Inman, Fordland; one son, John and Diane Nichols, Goodland, Kan,; 21 grandchildren; 67 great grandchildren and 28 great-great grandchildren. She has one surviving sister, Mary Heye, of Troy, Idaho. Alverta was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Pansy Nichols; and one son, Nathan Nichols; and six sisters and two brothers and one son-in-law, Jack Berry. Services for Alverta Hargis were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Clinkingbeard Chapel with burial in Union Chapel Cemetery near Fordland.
