James was the son of David and Lucinda (Wilson) Storey. Lucinda later married Elias York.

He married Bernice Fell Williams 24-Oct-1906 in Sebewa, Ionia, Michigan.

James and Bernice had two sons, Max and Maurice, and one daughter Marguerite. Maurice was killed in action in Germany in WWII.
