US Congressman. Born near Milledgeville, Georgia, he attended Yale University and engaged in agricultural pursuits. In 1835, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress, serving until 1836, when he resigned when elected Major General by the legislature of Georgia, to command troops during the Cherokee War. After the war, he was elected to the Georgia State Senate in 1837, but later resigned when appointed as Secretary of the State of Georgia, serving (1841-43). He died at the age of 72 in Milledgeville, Georgia.
