Daughter of Christian Gundersen and Edel Henrichsdatter.

Sister of Even "Ivan", Gunder, and Karen Anne Christensen.

Sister-in-law of Anethe Matea Larsdatter Christensen (wife of Even).

Wife of John C. Hontvet for 20 years. Married 17 August 1866 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Mother of Clara Eleanor Hontvet.

Lived to age 51 years.

On 6 March 1873 her sister, Karen and sister-in-law, Anethe were murdered on Smutty-Nose Island (off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine). Maren survived the attack. She was 37 years old at the time.
After the murders, John and Maren moved to Portsmouth, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. Shortly after 1880 they moved back to Norway. It was said that the publicity of the trial was too much for her. In 1884 Maren stayed in Norway. John and Clara returned to the U.S.A.

Louis H.F. Wagner was executed on 25 June 1875 for the murders. It was rumored that Maren confessed to the murders on her deathbed.
