Benjamin Irvin, the 4th of John & Malinda (Crockett) Sims's 13 children, was born in Wilson, Audrain Co, MO. Only six of his siblings survived to move with his parents to Hazen, Prairie County, AR.

This sad obituary is from the Crockett family Bible owned by Lee Crockett and has been made available by Warren Lawrence, FindAGrave member 47563805. In 1993 Lee donated her Crockett Family research to the University of Missouri Manuscript Collection in Columbia MO. Warren gave the following meaning of the words ult. & inst., sometimes used in old obituaries; "ult." is short for ultimo and means "in the preceding month." "inst." means "in the current month."

December 1873
"In this country. on the 26th ult., diphtheria, Mary B., aged 4 years, 8 months, and 9 days, Emma C., aged 2 years, 10 months, and 27 days, and Benjamin I., aged 1 year, 9 months, and three days, and on the 4th inst., of the same disease, O. Stella, aged 5 years, 11 months, and 27 days, children of John and Malinda Sims.

Seldom does the hand of death fall so crushingly upon a household removing, at one full swoop, four promising and lovely children, the source of parental love and pride, and the objects of much promise in the years to come.

May He who 'tempers the wind to the shorn lamb' sustain the parents in this their great affliction."
