Tony was the son of Casper and Margaret (Gabriel) Cornelius. Tony was a national fire hose coupling champion for Nebraska around 1890, competing in national competitions in Chicago.

Tony first married Ida Gladys Reynolds in 1884 at Kearney, Nebraska. Tony moved to Chicago during the mid-late 1890s and married Margaret Saylor in La Porte County, Indiana in 1899.
