Cleo (Schleier) Bates was born on Saturday, June 15, 1912, in Earling, IA, the daughter of Henry and Catherine (Weiland) Schleier.

On Wednesday, October 16, 1935, Cleo married Jim Bates in Albia, IA.

Cleo attended Mount St. Mary's Academy in Cherokee, IA; and St. Mary's College in Omaha, NE.

She was a dental receptionist in her dentist-husband's office in Albia; Jim was a dentist in Albia before and after World War II. While Jim served overseas in the US Army during the war, Cleo and her son Jim lived in Washington, DC, with Cleo's mother.

Cleo was often called "Pal" because that was what she called most people.

She was a member of Albia St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society, the Philanthropic Educational Organization Sisterhood, the Albia Women's Club, and a Gray Lady Volunteer at the Veterans Medical Center in Knoxville, IA.

Cleo and Jim had 1 son, Jim, and 4 grandchildren.

Cleo's husband Jim died on May 16, 1975. Cleo lived as a widow for the next 16½ years.

Cleo, 79 years old, died on Wednesday, October 30, 1991, at the Ottumwa (IA) Regional Health Center. Her wake was held at 7:00 p.m. at the Gilbert Funeral Home in Albia on November 1. Following an 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 2 funeral Mass at Albia St. Mary's Church, concelebrated by Father M. J. Brothersen and Father Bernard Weir, she was buried beside her husband in St. Mary's Cemetery, Albia.
