Emma graduated from Presbyterian Hospital Nursing School in Chicago, Illinois. After finishing nursing school, she did private duty, and worked for Mrs. Borden, of the Borden Creamery (who was the mother-in-law of Adlai Stevenson). Then during WWI, a doctor from Presbyterian Hospital got a group together that went to France and were nurses for the British and Emma was one of them to go. They were among the first to be on the front line. Then when the U.S. got in the war, she came home, then went back to France as an Army nurse. When she returned home, she worked in various Veterans hospitals and eventually became Superintendent of Nurses at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Then she changed, and received public health training at the University of Minnesota. Was superintendent of a hospital in Richmond, Indiana, and also worked at Wheeling, West Virginia. Was Director of the Public Health Nursing Association and Executive Secretary of the Wayne County Tuberculosis Association for 7 years (in Richmond, Indiana) Was with the Illinois State Department of Public Health. She went to Richmond, Indiana from a position in Denver, Colorado as member of the itinerant nursing staff of the State Tuberculosis organization. Prior to being affiliated with the Colorado State TB organization, she was with the Nursing Service of the Veterans Bureau for 3 years.
