Driver is charged in fatal wreck

One of the drivers in a three-vehicle crash Oct. 12 on Carolina Beach Road that resulted in fatal injuries to a woman was charged Monday with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

Highway Patrol investigators did not file the charge against Jill Johnston until after the death of Karen Erdman, Trooper A.G. Stephenson said.

Ms. Erdman, 39, a teacher at Ashley High School, died Thursday at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. A memorial service was held Sunday at the school.

Ms. Erdman was a passenger in a sport utility vehicle driven by Beij M. Beltrisi, 39. Troopers said Ms. Johnston, 45, of Burbank Road, was northbound on Carolina Beach Road and attempted to make a left-hand turn onto Cathay Road, causing her car to be struck by a southbound SUV driven by Chhieu Lav, 37, of Carolina Beach. A southbound Nissan SUV driven by Ms. Beltrisi attempted to swerve away from the wreck, made contact with Ms. Lav’s SUV and overturned, Trooper Stephenson said.

Ms. Beltrisi remained in critical condition Monday night at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Ms. Johnston was in good condition Friday and not listed as a patient at the hospital Monday. Ms. Lav suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Ms. Johnston will appear on the charge in New Hanover County District Court."
