When James Robert Clark Toland was born on February 17, 1871, in Marshall, West Virginia, his father, Samuel, was 32 and his mother, Minerva, was 30. He married Bertha Viola Reeder in 1920. They had 13 children in 20 years. He died on February 16, 1949, in Marshall, West Virginia, at the age of 77.
He was a retired farmer, he died from a heart attack.
