U.S. Congressman. Educated at Davidson College, he engaged in agricultural pursuits and was a successful cotton merchant. Entering politics, he was a member of the Laurinburg City Council, (1917-19) and Mayor of Laurinburg, North Carolina, (1919-21). In 1930, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-first Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of William C. Hammer, serving until 1931. Not a candidate for election, he resumed his former business interests, was member of the Laurinburg school board, (1941-44) and North Carolina State Commissioner of game and inland fisheries, (1941-45).
