A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 13, at Friendly Avenue Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Patrick Cronin officiating. Interment will follow at Green Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Cheek was born August 26, 1917, to the late Benjamin Smith Cheek and Katie Thompson Cheek. He was a banker, beginning his career in 1939 with The Bank of Greensboro. Mr. Cheek opened and managed the first drive-in bank in Greensboro. He continued his career until retiring from First Union National Bank in 1976. Alex was a lifelong resident of Greensboro and a lifetime member of Friendly Avenue Baptist Church. He was a soloist in the church choir and was a Sunday school teacher for over 65 years. During that time, he was called upon to sing at hundreds of weddings, funerals and special music events. He held numerous church offices and was especially honored when his class was named The Alex Cheek Class.
Mr. Cheek was also predeceased by six brothers; two sisters and a grandson, Clyde Alexander Cheek, III.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 66 years, Lois Calhoun Cheek; son, Clyde Alexander Cheek, Jr. and wife, Carol of Raleigh; daughter, Susan Cheek Johnson and husband, Joe of Charlotte; granddaughter, Patricia Ann Brantley and husband, Vance of Raleigh; grandson, Robert D. Reynolds, III and wife, Ginger of Wilmington, N.C., Caroline Cheek-Hill and husband, Martin of Raleigh; and brother, Billy E. Cheek and wife, Teresa of Greensboro. He was especially proud of his great-grandchildren, Jackson, Preston, Jacob and Witt.
The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. prior to the service in the Fellowship Hall.
