U.S. Senator. He attended the Washington and Lee University Virginia, graduated from the law department of the University of North Carolina in 1911, was admitted to the bar in 1912 and commenced to practice law in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He was judge of the common pleas court of Atlantic City (1922-32), a member of the New Jersey State Supreme Court Commission (1923-35) and first assistant Attorney General of New Jersey (1934-36). In 1937, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until 1943. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
