William Lewis Piatt (1834-1918) was a farmer who served in the United States Civil War. (b. September 7, 1834; Westbrookville, Sullivan County, New York, 12785, USA - d. January 22, 1918; Middletown, Sullivan County, New York, USA)

He was the son of Daniel Piatt (1797-1881) and Aesenath Kerr (1806-1890) aka Aesenath Knox.

William married Minnie Woods (1843-1871) and had the following children: John F. Piatt (1860-aft1880) who married Marietta Clark; Mary A. Piatt (1861-aft1880); Silas M. Piatt (1862-?); William H. Piatt (1864-aft1880); and David Alexander Piatt (1870-1939) who married Mary Estella Culver (1873-1913).

Second marriage:
In 1872, after the death of Minnie, William married Phoebe Hubbard (1855-1910)

Together they had the following children: Nora Belle Piatt (1874-after1930) who married Herman Conklin and after a divorce she married Algernon E. Skinner (1867-c1938) aka Algie Skinner; Margaret Piatt (1879-1952) aka Mae Piatt, who married William Nathan McDowell (1882-1966) aka Bill McDowell; George D. Piatt (1883-?); Bertha Piatt (1887-1978) who married Floyd Griffin; and Clarence Piatt (1892-?) who never married.

Civil War:
William was a farmer and he fought in the Civil War from 1864 to 1865, as a private in Company K in the 20th Regiment of the New York Provisional Cavalry. He enlisted on January 20, 1864 and was discharged on August 09, 1865 in Louisville, Kentucky.

Mamakating Township:
The family appears in the 1880 US Census living in Mamakating Township, Sullivan County, New York under the names "William Piett" and "Phebey Piett". In 1900 they were still living in Mamakating Township and in the census Phoebe was listed as "Phibe J. Piatt".

Death:
He died on January 22, 1918, Middletown, New York.

Obituary:
"William L. Piatt. After an illness of long duration. William L. Piatt, aged 83 years, four months and 15 days, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wm. McDowell, 18 Mill street. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Piatt, and was born at Westbrookville, where he had always lived, being a farmer by occupation. He was a veteran of the Civil War of 1864-1865, serving under Captain John S. Hicks, as a private of Co. K, 20th Regiment of New York Provisional Cavalry, being a volunteer. He enlisted Jan. 20, 1864. By special order he was discharged Aug. 9, 1865, at Louisville, Ky. He is survived by the following children: John Piatt. of Cuddebackville; Mary, wife of James Needham, of Newburgh; David, of near Yankee Lake; Bertha, wife of Floyd Griffen, of Westbrookville; Belle, wife of A. L. Skinner, of Winterton; George and Clarence, of this city. Also, one brother, D. H. Platt, of Westbrookvile. The funeral services will be held Friday. at 2 o'clock, at the Methodist Church, Westbrookville."
