Daddy was very loyal to his uncles. Two of them Achilles and Joseph Gabbard never marred and lived in a small house on, what is now Walking Branch Road at Athol, Kentucky. A widowed sister, Lydia Markham lived with the two gentlemen and kept house and cooked for them. The journey from our house to theirs was close to three miles. To reach them it was necessary to cross the Middle Fork River and go by foot, or mule back, along rutted dirt roads where only sleds could travel.
