Husband of Mary Ann Elizabeth Gleaton and Hester Aultman
** Family stories about granddaddy Jiles.
By his 3rd great granddaughter Marie Williams Murrah
I was told Jiles was a short skinny man and mean in nature. It was said he used to beat his first wife Mary Gleaton. The family says Mary had really long hair and Jiles would tie it on a rafter and beat her. I was told Hester, his 2nd ? wife was a deaf mute which I recently verified. I will post proof on her page soon. There was said to be a 3rd wife but I cannot verify it nor do I know if Mary was for sure his 1st wife. I found and took all of his military papers to USC Military Museum years ago and was told Jiles was involved in the "friendly fire" incident in the Civil war on a "steam boat? or some kind of boat that was taking the soldiers back and forth. Jiles was on that boat that was accidently shot and run aground by it's own troops. He went into the water and got sick. That is why he was AWOL the next day. Jiles was a sharp shooter and that is why he was at some point assigned to Ripley's Rifle Rangers. My great granddaddy used to take care of the Spires family cemetery as did many of our family. I was told it was Jiles that planted the big Cedar tree that got struck by lightning and has fallen. It is said there are many babies buried there and the clay pots there used to mark the babies graves. Several twins from what I was told.
