Joseph W. Augustine, 86, of Remsen died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 1991, at Marian Health Center, Sioux City, after a brief illness.

Funeral services were at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at St. Mary's Catholic Church here. Concelebrating the Mass were his son, Msgr. Roger Augustine; his nephew, Rev. Jerome Degen of Ft. Dodge; and Rev. John J. McGuirk, pastor of St. Mary's parish. Burial was in the parish cemetery under direction of the Fisch Funeral Home.

Mr. Augustine was born Nov. 11, 1905, at Haverhill, Ia., to Ignatus and Mary (Funke) Augustine. He was raised and educated at Haverhill. At the age of 16 he moved with his parents to Geddes, S.D., where he assisted his father in farming.

His marriage to Alvina Schilmoeller took place Nov. 26, 1929, at St. Joseph's Church, Granville, Ia. The couple farmed at Geddes until 1941, when they moved to the Remsen area, and farmed until retiring and moving to town in 1964.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and past lay board member and a member of the Knights of Columbus and had served as financial secretary for several years.

Surviving are his wife, Alvina, of Remsen; nine sons, Msgr. Roger Augustine of Sioux City, Gerald, Tom and Wayne, all of Remsen, Ralph of Le Mars, Bill of Estherville, and Dick, Dan, and Mike, all of Sioux City; two daughters, Mrs. Dale (Clarice) Mousel and Mrs. Pete (Delores) Konz, all of Alton; 42 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; a brother, Victor of Grundy Center, Ia.; and two sisters, Mrs. Bernard (Monica) Kuhl of Marshalltown, Ia., and Mrs. Wayne (Marie) Olson of Madison, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Alvina and Lois, both in infancy; a great-grandson, Luke Mehrer, in infancy; five brothers, Eberhard, Gregory, Raymond, Ignatus, and Lawrence; and three sisters, Mrs. Louis (Lucy) Goodman, Mrs. Ray (Elizabeth) Knoll, and Mrs. Arthur (Priscilla) Staebler.

Casket bearers were Bob, Brian, Dave, Doug, Jim, and Mike Augustine, Dave Konz, and Matt Mousel.

Honorary pallbearers were Chris, Chuck, Ed, Ken, Larry, Scott, Steve, and Tim Augustine, and Rick Konz.
