Homer Hosea Johnson graduated from Oberlin College with a degree in Classics in 1885 and went on to Harvard University to earn his A.M. and LL. B degrees in 1886. A prominent lawyer in the Cleveland area for five decades, Johnson served his community and was an active philanthropist in his home town of New London, Ohio. Johnson was also a dedicated Oberlin alumni, serving the College's Board of Trustees from 1900 to 1924 and acting as the executor of the estate of classmate, Charles Martin Hall. Johnson had three wives, Janet "Nettie" Whitcomb, (1863-1890), Elizabeth Gertrude Beggs (d. 1896), and Louise Pope (d. 1957). Johnson's third marriage produced three children, Jeanette Johnson Dempsey, Philip Johnson, and Theodate Johnson.
